Living in Hyde Park

Hyde Park suits you if you want to walk to campus and live where most of student Leeds lives. It suits you less if you want a quiet road, a parking space or a professional crowd.

Hyde Park is the dense student heart of LS6, between the University of Leeds and Headingley. Most of it is red brick Victorian terraces and back to backs, let as shared houses to groups of friends, and most homes here are licensed Houses in Multiple Occupation.

People choose it for the walk to lectures, the social side and the cost per person of sharing a bigger house. Woodhouse Moor, the park everyone in Leeds calls Hyde Park, is on the doorstep. So are the Brudenell Social Club, an independent music venue on Queen's Road, and the Hyde Park Picture House, a Grade II listed cinema that still has its gas lighting.

The honest bit: it is busy, it is terraced, and the streets vary a lot. Two roads five minutes apart can feel like a different year, which is why this guide goes street by street.

Getting around

Buses, trains and getting to campus

Hyde Park is a walk from the University of Leeds and a short bus ride from the city centre, with Burley Park station on the Harrogate line just to the west.

    Most of Hyde Park is a 5 to 15 minute walk from the University of Leeds, depending on the street, with Woodhouse Moor between the two.

  • Bus

    Buses on Woodhouse Lane, the A660, stop at Hyde Park Corner and run past the university into the city centre.

  • Train

    Burley Park is the nearest station, a short walk west of Hyde Park. Trains run on the Harrogate line into Leeds station and out towards Headingley, Horsforth and Harrogate.

Kensington Terrace

Kensington Terrace is one of the quieter streets in Hyde Park, lined with mature trees and set back from the traffic on Hyde Park Road. It feels a long way from the main student routes despite being a few minutes from them.

We let several one-off properties here that do not look like anything else in LS6. The houses tend to be larger, laid out differently to the standard terrace, and they go early to groups who have seen them before. If you want a house with some character rather than another six bed terrace, this is the street to watch.

Midland Road

Midland Road is one of the calmer streets in the area, with mature trees and a more settled, residential feel than the roads closer to the main routes through Hyde Park. It suits groups who want the location without living on top of the noise.

The housing is mostly Victorian terraces across a range of sizes, which makes it a good street for groups who have already lived together and know what they want from a second or third year house.
